Exploring the Torah of Bread: No Flour, No Torah — Scholar-in-Residence Temple Adat Shalom. Poway, CA January 10 - 12th, 2020

Debbie will be sharing research from the ChocolateBabkaProject with Temple Adat Shalom as scholar-in-residence with three presentations over the weekend of January 10, 2020. Please join us for:

Friday night, January 10: Not Your Bubbe’s Challah–Exotic Shabbat Breads. This talk lifts our palates beyond the familiar Ashkenazi-centric challah to explore Jewish festive breads from Sephardi, African, and Mizrachi customs. These celebratory, yeasty treats reflect Jewish diversity as they showcase less familiar worldwide Jewish communities.

Saturday morning, January 11: The Jewish Polemics of Leaven. This pre-Pesach text study considers Torah traditions about bread, especially as they relate to leavening (chametz).

Sunday morning, January 12: Shaping Our Prayers with Challah. This hands on session will explore Jewish ideas and prayer through challah dough. Ashkenazi traditions of shaping dough imbue it with almost mystical powers. Express your own prayers through the dough.
